Low pressure area in Bay of Bengal to bring heavy rains in east, central India

    New Delhi, Jun 11: India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday said that under the influence of cyclonic circulation over Northwest Bay of Bengal, a ‘Low Pressure Area’(LPA) has formed over there and adjoining Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal coasts with the associated cyclonic circulation extending upto mid-tropospheric levels.Noting that the LPA is likely to become more marked during next 24 hours and move west-northwestwards across Odisha, the IMD further said under its influence, a fairly widespread to widespread rainfall activity with isolated to scattered ‘heavy to very heavy falls’ very likely over most parts of East India and adjoining Central India such as Odisha, Chhattisgarh and parts of Maharashtra from today. “It will pull the Southwest Monsoon which reached central India five days ahead of schedule further northward, leading to widespread rain and thunderstorms across central, eastern and northeastern states. The LPA is moving west-northwestwards towards Odisha”, the officials in Met department said.The national weather bureau has also issued the warnings, with forecasts of isolated extremely heavy rainfall of more than 200 mm per day over Odisha on June 11 and 12, Chhattisgarh from June 11 to 13, East Madhya Pradesh on June 13,Vidarbha on June 12 and 13; and Konkan from June 12 to 15. Isolated heavy rains are also forecast over coastal Karnataka and Kerala from June 12 to 15 due to the strengthening of westerly winds under the LPA’s influence.The districts of districts like Malkanagiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Sundergarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur are likely to experience heavy rain today.Owing to these weather influences, the IMD has placed a red warning over Odisha for Friday and Saturday; over Chhattisgarh from Friday to Sunday, over Vidarbha for Saturday and Sunday and over Konkan from Saturday to Tuesday. With this warning of the highest level, the concerned states have been advised to instruct residents and authorities to take preventive measures to save lives and property.
