Massive jump in India’s daily COVID-19 cases, 90,928 fresh infections reported; Omicron tally surges to 2,630

    Desk, 06-Jan: India registered a single-day rise of 90,928 fresh COVID-19 cases, and 325 deaths in a span of 24 hours, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday.The Omicron tally has also climbed to 2,630 with a daily positivity rate of 6.43 per cent.However, out of the total Omicron positive cases, 995 have been discharged from hospitals. So far 26 states have reported Omicron infection, said the Union health ministry.As of today, Maharashtra has 797 Omicron cases followed by Delhi at 465, Rajashtan 236 and Kerala 234 cases.19,206 patients recovered from the disease during this period taking the total number of recoveries in India to 19,206 recoveries in the last 24 hours increases Total Recoveries to 3,43,41,009.The recovery rate currently is 97.81 per cent.According to the health ministry, the active cases account for less than 1 per cent of the total cases at 0.81 per cent.The ministry further informed that 68.53 crore COVID-19 tests have been conducted in the country so far with the administration of 148.67 crore vaccine doses under the Nationwide Vaccination Drive.Meanwhile, in a press conference on Wednesday, the Health Ministry had termed the rapid spread of Omicron infections and surge of COVID-19 cases in India a matter of concern.“Omicron was now the predominant circulating strain in cities and all mass gatherings should be avoided,” said ICMR head Dr Balram Bhargava.The ministry further termed that Maharashtra, West Bengal, Delhi, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Jharkhand and Gujarat are States of concern where there has been a rise in coronavirus infections.28 districts in the country are reporting more than 10 per cent weekly positivity.(CNS)
