Srinagar,19- Apr: Several parts of old city in Srinagar are facing water shortage even as the holy month of Ramzan is in progress.Several areas of the city are reeling under acute scarcity of drinking water from the past several days. People are up in arms against the authorities for failing to provide regular water supply. They alleged that despite bringing the issue into the notice of the officials concerned nothing was done.Residents from Lal Chowk, Barbarshah, Habba kadal, Karan Nagar, Batamaloo, Eidgah, Hawal, Alamgari Bazaar, Baghwan Pora, Khanqah-e-Sokhta, Tarabal, Nawa Kada,l Narawara, Rainawari and Khanyar areas in the city complained of continuous water scarcity for the last many days.We are facing shortage of water in this blessed month and the authorities are doing nothing. We are being forced to come on roads, alleged a group of residents from the Habba Kadal area of the city.“When I opened the tap to perform ablution after Sehri (predawn meals) there was not a drop of water,”Mushtaq Ahmad , a resident of Tankipora said.Before the beginning of the holy month, government had claimed that they would ensure proper electricity and drinking water supply during this month.“Things have gone from bad to the worse in Ramdhan. We get tap water only for few hours in a day,” Ahmad addedHe said most of the inhabitants were using water motors during the night hours to get some water.The residents threatened to protest if the problem was not resolved at the earliest.Meanwhile,Public Health Engineering (PHE) officials said that the department is trying to provide adequate water supply to the people.“We are trying to provide maximum water supply to all areas, but people should also cooperate. They should not waste water or use booster pumps. It creates problem in the distribution,” said a PHE official. “There is water shortage, but the situation has turned worse due to use of water motors,” he said.(CNS)
