Decline in rivulet water affects fish species in Kulgam

Kulgam,24-Dec;On one side the Fisheries department is promoting fish farming while on the other side the irrigation department by its omissions of not providing requisite waters results in decline of the same.As per reports to CNS, almost 20 fish farmers have established trout farms with rivulet Maaw as its water source but with advent of autumn and winter, the water in rivulet seriously started getting dried up resultantly the ponds are not getting requisite water for fish to survive with the risk of mishap to the farms.The people beside fish farmers have complained time and again that Rivulets, tributaries and water channels are dried up resultantly they are badly suffering.The locals complained that with loss of water, people lose drinking water facility so does their domestic animals. They alleged that the irrigation department is sleeping over the matter and is not taking any action in the matter.We are concerned in-case fire breaks out anywhere and we have no water to extinguish the same and it can sometimes prove to be extremely detrimental as well”, locals added .The locals urged the higher concerned authorities to address the issue as soon as possible so that people don’t face problems any further.Meanwhile, on being contacted by CNS, AEE Irrigation Kulgam, Mukhtar Ahmad Said that they are trying their best to resolve this issue as soon as possible.
