Srinagar-Leh National Highway closed; one person killed, 5 injured in cloudbursts

SRINAGAR: One person was killed and five others were injured in multiple cloud bursts in Kashmir and one of them in Ganderbal district has triggered flash floods leading to closure of Srinagar-Leh National Highway.

One person was killed and 5 others were injured in a cloud burst in Brenpatri area of Tral in Pulwama district.

The man has been identified as Arshid Ahamd son of Bashir Ahamd Doya of Jammu division. The injured include Zakir Gojer son of Faqeer Gojer, Pervaiz Ahmad Gojer son in law of Bashirudin Gojer and Jalaludin Chopan sn of Sideeq Chopan.

A cloudburst in Kullan area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district triggered flash floods and landslides leading to closure of Srinagar-Leh national highway.

Reports reaching here stated that the flash floods occurred in a nallah at in Kullan leading to landslides.

Several houses were inundated; causing damages. It was also said that the Srinagar-Leh highway was blocked by the flash floods and subsequent landslides.

People from the affected houses have been evacuated and the machinery has been pressed into service to clear the Srinagar-Leh highway.

Officials said that while the traffic stands blocked in the Srinagar-Leh highway, efforts are being made to restore the traffic as earliest as possible.

Further, the men and machines of Border Road Organisation have been put to use and the efforts are being made to clear the landslide. However, the officials further said that the heavy rains in the area, followed by flash floods with mud/rubble are making the task a bit difficult.
