Leh, Oct 02: Rural Development Department in collaboration with Ladakh Cycling Club Leh today organized a cycle rally programme, sponsored by ICICI Bank Leh to mark the 151st Birth Anniversary celebrations of Mahatama Gandhi.
To mark this day 126 students between the age group of 10-23 both boys and girls participated in a cycle rally to spread awareness about cleanliness and harmful effects of plastic use. Divisional Commissioner Ladakh, Saugat Biswas was accompanying the cyclist throughout the rally till it reached the end destination.
The 20 km cycle rally that started from NDS Stadium Leh culminated at Project Tsangda Segregation Centre, Choglamsar. The cycle rally also passed through the Amusement/cycle track which is under construction at Choglamsar. This is a Rural Development Department project under the Rurban Mission.
Speaking at the concluding function, Deputy Commissioner Leh, Sachin Kumar Vaishya urged the students to learn the values and principles which Gandhi Ji heed in his life like truth, non-violence, respect for all to bring self-discipline and harmony. He also reiterated to students about the “Swachh Bharat Mission or Clean India Mission” initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 2nd October, 2014 to ensure high standards of cleanliness in and around our vicinity and across the nation at large.
Director Rural Development, Tahir Hussain in his address spoke about Gandhiji’s ideologies of peace and non-violence and how these can be fostered in a positive and constructive manner in the present scenario. He further urged everyone to keep the environment clean for good health and hygiene.
Later, Deputy Commissioner Leh, Director Rural Department and Assistant Commissioner Rural distributed certificates to the participants.
Sonam Norbo, ACR Leh, ICICI Bank Manager Aziz Rafia, BDO Leh, Tsering Angchuk, President Ladakh Cycling Club, Tsering Angdu were also present on the occasion.
Similar programmes were also organized at Sub-Division level and different Panchayats under the ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ campaign. A national pledge was also administered among participants on the occasion.
