Water scarcity sparks protest in Batamaloo and Anantnag

Srinagar 26Aug; Scores of areas in the summer capital are reeling under acute shortage of drinking water amid scorching heat.Residents of Batamaloo here staged a protest over the acute shortage of water in the area.The protesters raised slogans against the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department and blocked the road near Danderkha Chowk for almost an hour, using wooden logs and worn-out tyres.“There is not a drop of water to drink as taps are running dry. Every time we visited the office of Executive Engineer Public Health Engineering with the request to restore supply in the area but to no avail,” protesters said.Protesters, mainly women holding sticks in their hands, sat on a dharna, chanting slogans against the PHE Department.Meanwhile, Locals in Chenigund area of Dooru Anantnag district held a protest demonstration against what they called the failure of the Public Health Engineering department in providing drinking water to the area.Protestors told , Department has failed to provide clean drinking water to the inhabitants of this area. The problem of supplying potable water has existed for years now. We brought the issue into notice of concerned authorities repeatedly but till date the authorities have done nothing to restore water supply to the area.We are now appealing the concerned authorities to look into our matter and end the clean drinking water woes of this area, which is our basic right, added the locals of both areas.(CNS)
