24-May; Prime Minister Narendra Modi will install a historic golden sceptre called Sengol near the Lok Sabha Speaker’s seat while dedicating the newly constructed Parliament building to the nation on Sunday. This spectre was used on 14th August 1947 by the first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru when the transfer of power took place from the British to Indians. Sengol is a Tamil word which means full of wealth and this spectre symbolises virtual and ethical rule. Sengol measuring five feet is a masterpiece of Indian art with rich workmanship from top to bottom. It has been brought from a museum in Allahabad. Briefing media in New Delhi on Wednesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah highlighted the history of the sacred Sengol and said there is a tradition associated behind this with ages. He added that Sengol had played an important role in country’s history and it became a symbol of the transfer of power.
