NEW DELHI: Three Kashmiri students of Agra’s Raja Balwant Singh Engineering College who were arrested for cheering in favour of Pakistan’s win against India in T20 world cup were finally released from jail on Monday. The students were in jail for over five months after being charged with sedition for allegedly celebrating the Pakistan cricket team’s victory. The students had been granted bail by the Allahabad High Court on March 30.The three students were thrashed by the right-wing group and a section of lawyers for allegedly setting a WhatsApp status on Pakistan team’s T20 win. They were arrested on October 27, 2021.After being charged with sedition, no lawyer turned up to represent them for a few weeks. It took two weeks for the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) to find a lawyer for them. Advocate Madhuvan Dutt Chaturvedi a Mathura-based lawyer who had completed his law graduation from Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar University represented the students at the court. Chaturvedi’s decision to represent the Kashmiri trio in Agra did not sit well with some sections of the legal community. As per earlier updates on the case, the judge did not attend the hearing for bail on four separate occasions.
