Srinagar,22-Mar ; People across the city thronged the markets on the eve of Ramadan to make purchases for the fasting month. As dates are the most sought-after product they are occupying top place in the shopping list. Dry fruits and fruits are also in demand“We always stock up our shops with new varieties of dates and fruits. It is a good business month for us as well. Customers make bulk purchases…” said Nazir Ahmad, a dry fruit vendor from Amira Kadal.Though the religious practice of breaking the day-long fast with dates is common, fruits, especially the more tender ones like watermelons and other fruits are also in demand.The officials concerned have been directed by the government to keep a regular check on markets to keep a tab on the quality of food and prices of essentials.One of the common practices during Ramadan is charity and people also purchase things for donation.“This is the month when we are supposed to practice more good deeds and charity is one of them. It is advisable to contribute food and money among the poor and needy. While making purchases for ourselves we also buy things for the poor,” said Mushtaq Ahmad, a city resident. The mosques and shrines have been decorated with lights and new furnishing.
