Snowfall; Dozen flights cancelled over poor visibility

Srinagar, 04-Jan; Kashmir received fresh snowfall on Tuesday which hit the to and fro air traffic operations in the region. Due to snowfall, poor visibility hampered operations, leading to cancellation of over dozen flights to the valley.Director Srinagar airport, Kuldeep Singh while confirming about the cancellation of 22 flights, told that further call on the 20 flight operations including international one will be taken according to the prevailing weather conditions during the day.Earlier, in the morning, flights were delayed at the Srinagar airport after Kashmir received a fresh spell of snow. However, later on, flights were cancelled. As the flights got cancelled,huge traffic rush was seen on the roads, especially on the airport road. The passengers had to return back home amidst snowfall. Some alleged that the authorities failed in handling the situation efficiently.The Srinagar office of the Meteorological Department on Tuesday issued an ‘orange alert’ in Kashmir saying the prevalent rains and snowfall are expected to intensify in coming days.In view of the impending bad weather, the MET office urged people not to venture out on avalanche and landslide prone areas, unless extremely necessary.“Keep power/light back up( in case of power failure),” the MET office said in the handout while urging motorists to drive “very slowly and in low gear while driving on snow bound area,” the Srinagar MET office said in an advisory.(CNS)
