KASHMIR: Migratory birds proving to be a great attraction for tourists Waseem baba

Srinagar, 03-Jan;Every year about five lakh avions arrive in Kashmir from different parts of the world including Central Asia and Russia for breeding. Dal lake, Wular lake and wetlands like Hokersar, Khoshalsar, Shalbugh offer excellent sanctuary for breeding and hatching for different species of migratory birds.The flight path of these birds remains a mystery as they travel hundreds of kilometres in October to reach Kashmir and leave with their young ones in March. Migratory birds that arrive in Kashmir include waterfowl, Tufted Duck, Gadwall, Brahminy Duck, Garganey, Greylag Goose, Mallard, Common Merganser, Northern Pintail, Common Pochard, Ferruginous Pochard, Red-Crested Pochard, Ruddy Shelduck, Northern Shoveler, Common Teal and Eurasian Wigeon. Valley’s lakes and wetlands have proved excellent habitats for the migratory birds who survive on insects and fish.Experts say that these birds are part of the ecosystem of Kashmir and help maintain equilibrium in the environment. The wildlife department says they wait for the migratory birds to arrive in Kashmir with great enthusiasm. The breathtaking view of hundreds of migratory birds leaves scores of tourists and locals enthralled. Bird watching is likely to be added to the tourists’ itinerary in future by the tourism department due to the interest it arouses among the visitors.(CNS)
